These two new girl groups are setting up a concept that is a little different from those of previous female singers. They shattered the mold of cute and sexy singers and are currently presenting a powerful feeling using punk or boyish concepts. Instead of trying to be pretty, they are keeping their individuality with their bubbly charms. 2NE1 and 4Minute have an unconventional color.

The title songs of both groups are trendy. They use electronic sounds and hooks to create music that is closest to the current rage in music. 2NE1’s ‘Fire’ and 4Minute’s ‘Hot Issue’ are true to the hook song trend. African-style percussion instruments and reggae-influenced rhythms, along with 80’s funky rhythms make these songs unique.

The key features of the choreographies are their intensity and power. The overflowing power portrays a boyish feel. 2NE1’s Gong Minji and 4Minute’s HyunA set themselves apart from others by singing and either doing the splits or raising their legs high in the air at the same time. The interlude and melodies are loaded with power by including break dancing and other skillful moves.

The clothing shows the most unconventional color. 2NE1 wears vests with studded ornaments, leather leggings, Lego accessories, and high top shoes to create a mix-and-match feel. 4Minute has attempted to create a candy, funky look. Cyborg sunglasses, leggings with holes in them, and all kinds of shirts are being used to create a unique trend.

Jung Boyoon, 4Minute’s chief stylist, explained, “The fur and leggings with holes that HyunA wears, the members’ neon clothes, and high top shoes complete their funky style that stands out. We considered the fact that it is easy for the younger audience to imitate these outfits and that they could create a trend.

SNSD, 2NE1, 4 Minute were the girl groups that are going strong lately, but now even Kara, Brown Eyed Girls, T-ara are also planning to be involved in this tight competition of ‘Girl Groups showdown’ in this month of August at the music industry.

To stay on top of the game, they each have their own strategies, which is focusing on which type of fan they are going to attract.

We can clearly see that they all are finding a specific gender of fans they are attracting. This determines if they are going to captures girls or guys heart.

“Capture the girl hearts!” the neutral charm of these girl groups

- 2NE1, 4 Minute, Brown Eyed Girls

On the contrary of the three other girl groups, it seems that these three girl groups have much lesser guy fans, which may be due to the boyish charm these girls showed.

The best and most fierce 2NE1 and 4Minute are always showing their different type of charms.

2NE1 and 4 Minute, although they are still young, these two girl groups are bravely experimenting this style of hip hop and candy funky concept. While other newbie girl groups are using cute concept like little sister image as their ways to get into the market, these girls are inventing a totally different concept, and also the concept to symbolize the boldness of the new generations.

[NEWS] Crazy for Kpop

by Seraphiel | 4:44 PM in | comments (2)

(scroll down for me2day updates!! )

By Niño Mark Sablan

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 22:46:00 07/24/2009

MANILA, Philippines – The world has gone crazy over Korean pop. Very popular right now are boy bands and girl groups with members who harmonize beautifully and showcase well-choreographed dance steps. Good-looking, stylish, entertaining and hotter than kimchi, these are some of Korea’s most in-demand groups.

(...skipped some unecessary parts)

Big Bang

This all-male musical group consists of five talented singers/dancers—G-Dragon, Tae Yang, T.O.P., Daesung and Seung Ri — who, even before coming together as a group, were successful solo artists. G-Dragon and Tae Yang started their careers when they were 12 years old, while T.O.P. was an underground rapper.

Apart from releasing award-winning albums and mini-albums of hip-hop songs, the Big Bang boys are also famous for their freestyle and street dancing. They are trendsetters, too, with their slanted caps, cornrows, triangular scarves, shutter shades and faux-hawks.

Famous for hits like “Haru Haru,” “La-la-la,” and “Number 1,” the boys command legions of fans in places like Japan, where they have released Japanese versions of their songs.

2NE1

Tagged as the female version of Big Bang, 2NE1 counts CL, Bom, Minzy and Dara (more popularly known as Sandara Park to Pinoys) as its members. While they can all sing and dance (their choreography is very impressive), each girl is unique when it comes to voice quality, image and fashion style. Still, they complement one another and look fab as a group.

Their first single, “Lollipop,” was an advertisement song with Big Bang that was used to promote a phone. Their actual debut single as a group, however, is the very energetic and catchy song “Fire.” The song has two music videos, one of which was featured on Perez Hilton’s blog.

It has also been reported that Interscope Records is interested in an American album for the girls. Not bad for a group that appeared on the scene only a couple of months ago.

2NE1 is scheduled to release a mini-album next week, one that contains the reggae-tinged pop/R&B song called “I Don’t Care.” We can’t wait to hear if the rest of their stuff is as good as “Fire.”

************

I want to let everyone know, that Perez Hilton also posted "I dont care" and "Gara Gara Go" music videos on his site. Wonder why these writers arent up to date? I'll let them off this time. ;P

As i was browsing around on tons of blogs (its becoming a daily ritual and its giving me a headache at times lol!) , I stumbled upon an article on Seoulbeats.com .
The writer chose CL as her #1 fiercest entertainer, #2 is G-dragon & #3 TOP.

*******

My Top 3 fiercest entertainers

KPOP entertainers fall into various categories. Today I am going to tackle my top 3 fiercest entertainers in the game. As I jotted down my list, I realized my 3 all belonged to one company, YG Ent. What’s interesting about the different entertainment companies is that each bring their own kind of uniqueness to the game. SM brings cuteness, JYP brings innovation, and YG brings ferocity. So today, I present to you, my top 3 fiercest entertainers in the KPOP world.

3. T.O.P- Not only is this rapper of mega group Big Bang nice to look at, but he’s got such a unique raspy element about his voice that sets him apart from many other rappers in the KPOP biz. Another aspect that makes him fiercer than other artists is that unlike many other idol “rappers,” he was an underground rapper, which means he had a passion for this art long before his days as an idol mega star. He’s also got big potential to become a great entertainer later on in his days.

2. G-Dragon- Back in the early days of BB, I used to never give this guy a second look. To me he just seemed like a little kid trying to do big things. I’ve soon realized how wrong I had been. People may poke fun at his fashion paux here and there but when it comes down to it, this dude has what it takes to be a true artist. I respect his ability to step out and dress the way he does and honestly 90% of the time I think he rocks his hair and style to the tee. Aside from his fashion, G-Dragon is a fierce leader, rapper, and entertainer. He’s got that star swag that he rocks out just enough to make you love him and respect him.

1. CL- My number 1 pick for fiercest star in the game. I’ve said it so many times, and I’ll say it a million more times, this chick is FIERCE. Right now in the KPOP game, I can’t really think of anyone else who possess the kind of SHABAM! factor this girl has and she has my respect to the end. What I love about CL is that her off stage persona is so different from her on stage persona. When she’s on that mic and the lights flash she’s unstoppable. Now, I know she’s still a newbie and she has miles to go, but being that this is her first couple of months in the KPOP game, she’s impressive. She makes 2NE1 what they are and I think YG picked a gold mine with this idol.

[Yang HS aka YG, July 16, 2009, (c) Choen]

Of the five members of Big Bang, G-Dragon and Tae Yang have been with Yang the longest. They both spent over six years as trainees at YG Eentertainment. Yang says, “They’d gone through long and hard training and have grown into extremely capable musicians,” and, “All I ever did was help them realize their full potentials. Watching those two, I thought I wanted to create not a boy band that fits the conventional formula but one that grows and matures on its own. Well, I guess the first step was a success.

Many people say the roots of Big Bang’s music lie in hip hop. But Yang does not necessarily think so. He says, “Big Bang is not a hip hop group. The only two members who have passion for hip hop music are G-Dragon and TOP.” Tae Yang is deeply interested in R&B, Dae Sung in ballads and trot music, and Seung Ri in traditional pop, says Yang.

[Sandara aka Dara of 2NE1, July 20, 2009, (c) Choen]

Sandara is older than any of the members of Big Bang, which is under the same label as 2NE1 but came out before them. She is closest to G-Dragon and Tae Yang. She says, “We used to hang out together when we were trainees,” and “They are younger than I am but they feel like older brothers and I feel like I can depend on them.” But she still feels awkward around the oldest member TOP. “Both of us are quiet and shy and when we’re alone, it gets a bit awkward sometimes,” she says with a smile.

[NEWS] Uhh oh!

by Aileen | 1:31 AM in | comments (0)

Before you start commenting, "what the hell is this?" I advise you to relax, and read this first.

Yesterday was July 23rd,
it's the start of the new copyright laws in Korea.

They have already started to hire people to monitor and enforce the new laws but the whole thing is still relatively unknown, no one really knows what constitutes a valid copyright infringement and what constitutes fair usage.

No one really knows how the 3 strikes policy is going to be monitored and enforced, or what the punishments are. But good news for copyright holders, they now get MORE MONEY benefiting us all. (sarcastic much?)

I'll explain a bit further, under the new laws, the percentage given to copyright holders has now increased significantly (Can't find the exact numbers right now but I'll post it when i find it).

This means there needs to be an increase in the cost of content to balance out the rest of the equation. I've heard numbers being thrown around of around 15% increase in the cost of CDs and so on. Nowcom seems to be using this as an excuse to make their mileage exchange program rather useless. (This is in the Clubbox Tutorial Thread).

We won't really see the impact of these laws until they start enforcing them which could take atleast several weeks to several months, also since they have no power outside of Korea, not sure how they are planning to enforce these for foreign located servers.

There is also another issue popped up yesterday
and for the most part it's a big one.

It's the introduction and passing
of the new 3 Media Laws in parliament.

The laws set out laws regarding IPTV and Media Company Ownership.

Big point of contention being the ability for newspaper companies and large corporation to own large stakes in Terrestrial Broadcasting Companies (MBC, KBS, SBS). They will now be allowed to hold up to 49% stakes in these broadcasters giving them huge saying power in the operation of these broadcasters.

Currently all 3 Broadcasters are on strike
and there is a good chance it's going to impact
what programs are going to air this week.

But there is also a deeper social issue with these laws, giving a newspaper or company decision making power in a broadcaster is going to start affecting what the broadcasters can and cannot do. This is huge issue and it means broadcasters who lose their impartiality when dealing with issues that don't agree with their owners, newspapers in Korea tend to be very biased left or right wing and rarely neutral.

There is also the issue of legality since the laws passed through parliament rather hastily and without proper conduct, but that's beyond the scope of this post.

Anyway that sums up whats been happening in the world of Korean Media Law in the last 2 weeks.

Now how is this going to affect us?
  • Depending on how long the protests go for, we won't seeing any new episodes of dramas and variety shows starting from next week onwards or even as early as Saturday.
  • Most likely there won't be a change in the copyright laws for awhile. (3 years minimum because that's how long the current government has left in power)
  • They are targeting primarily heavy uploaders and encoders of content so it remains to be seen how long Ental has left to live.
  • Public Korean Torrent sites are also under caution and uploaders are being cautious.
  • They are predicting that half of Korean Blogs and Cafes will shut down before years end.
  • Buying content legally will also become more expensive due to increases in royalty for copyright holders.
  • Nowcom hasn't said anything about their future directions for clubbox, pdbox or afrecca yet but all 3 services seem to contradict the new laws so their future isn't very clear cut.
  • Small recap of the copyright laws, parodies are illegal, posting a UCC/Youtube video of you using copyrighted content is now illegal (this includes personal reenactments of song sheets, singing, parodies etc), Blogs and Cafes are also forbidden from posting links to such content , Postings made prior to the 23rd are also considered illegal and they plan to search through community archives to find them, screen grabs from dramas and shows are illegal.

That's about it, the post was a bit long but i had a fair bit to cover.

Not really sure what the next step is for now, everyone seems to be taking a wait and see approach, no one knows how severely the government is going to enforce these laws and until then everyone is going to stay cautious.

They could also find a way to enforce their laws overseas but that seems unlikely, possible but unlikely.

Sales for 2NE1’s first mini album has surpassed 80,000 in a mere 2 weeks of its release.

According to YG Entertainment on 23rd July, “2NE1’s mini album sales reached 50, 000 in the past 8 days and with an additional 30, 000 sold recently, it has reached a total of 80,000. This is a great accomplishment”

On 22nd July, ”I Don’t Care” has also taken the top spot on online music charts like Melon, Bugs, etc. from Myungsica duet “Naengmyun”. Other songs from their album like “Pretty Boy”, “Stay Together” and “In the club” too have risen high up on realtime music charts.

YG Entertainment said, “2NE1 has written a new history in korean pop, it is the only girl group to have achieved such a record within 2 weeks’ of it album release. This was all made possible due to a good producer (yay Papa Teddy!!), the well-composed songs, the performance stages, the fashion stylists as well as the members’ individual talents.”

2NE1’s activites to continue till the end of the year

2NE1’s fire has been burning non-stop ever since their debut. The group consisting of CL, Park Bom, Gong Min Ji and Sandara Park has been conquering charts over and over again since their hit song ‘Fire” was released in early May this year. With their second song “I Don’t Care” they have managed to clinch #1 at various music stations.

But this is not all. “I Don’t Care” has been dominating music charts, their first mini album containing 6 tracks too has been garnering a strong record in sales from July 15th – July 21st.
YG entertainment CEO Yang Hyeon Seok said the main reason for 2NE1’s success is their naturalness. “Many people feel that idol groups have an artificial pretense to them, but 2NE1 members are seen as friendly and down-to-earth. Their fashion and music connect people to them.” He added, ” 2NE1’s is very serious about their music; and when they go on stage, they shine brightly and give a powerful performance.”

Even after long hours of practice, the members of 2NE1 maintain their endless enthusiasm and vitality. It has been less than 3 months since their debut and 2NE1 is still considered as a rookie in the industry, thus have a long way to go . Yang hyeon seok said, ”There is still a need to improve, by giving 2NE1 more opportunities to perform on stage for them to gain experience.:

Nevertheless, he added, “2NE1’s promotional activities will be continued until the end of the year, so by that time of the year, 2NE1 would be able to put up strong performances and rise up to the top.”

According to an unidentified Korean music producer, "Other than idols and trot singers, nothing else makes money now. We can thus only concentrate our efforts on areas that make money." That pretty much sums up the present state of the Korean music industry in recent years.

The Korean music scene has been enveloped by a sweeping wave of "idol mania" in recent years which shows no sign of slowing down at all. It all started with Big Bang about 2-3 years ago and this was followed by groups like Wonder Girls, Girls' Generation, SHINee, 2PM, Kara, etc as they continued to be red hot and coming to a point where there's no return. This has continued in 2009 with female groups like 2NE1 and 4Minute who have become really popular in a short period of time and further strengthening the market's belief that "idols will bring in the money".

Music labels/companies are thus on their toes to unload their own idol groups if they haven't got one, in order to keep up with the market demand. DSP Entertainment who boasts of SS501 and Kara are preparing to unleash a new female group, while JYP Entertainment and Cube Entertainment are preparing to release a new 3 member female and male group respectively as well. There are likely to be more.

O the other hand, the trot world has not been spared either with many new acts debuting even though they are the complete opposite of idol groups. Trot used to be performed by middle-aged singers but the trend is gradually shifting thanks to the popularity of young trot singers like Jang Yoon Jung, Park Hyun Bin, etc which is a strange phenomenon to many. Just this year alone, we have a 3 member male trot group, 3Chongsa (3 Musketeers), LPG 2nd generation, Rani (Jang Young Ran), etc.

The problem becomes more apparent as everyone does the same genre of music and the market becomes oversaturated, creating a situation where only the best survives while the rest feed on scraps and eventually get eliminated. A DSP Entertainment representative expressed, "H.O.T and Sechs Kies bought about an idol mania back in the late 90s as they became really popular. Many companies tried to feed on the mania, and hastily aseembled their singers and groups to get a share of the pie. But inevitably, most of the companies go bankrupt and everything returned to normal."

Jang Yoon Jung's management expressed, "It's something to be happy about to see so many newbies debuting as trot singers but they do not foresee the problems. Most of the time, trot singers have to perform in adverse conditions. Many of them do not understand that and only have the idea of making big money as a trot singer. Most of them just give up in the end. You have to be mentally prepared if you are entering the trot world."

Newcomer 4-member group 2NE1 member Park Bom revealed that there were actually plans for her to be in a trio group together with Sandara Park and Goo Hye Sun.

Park Bom was with the other 2NE1 members attending the exhibiting of fellow YG artistes Goo Hye Sun as shown on 2NE1 TV aired on 22nd. During the show, the girls had given their congratulatory greetings to Goo Hye Sun, she smiled and looked at the camera, “I will appear here too? So you will do a HyeSun TV too?

With that Park Bom said, “In 2005, I heard that YG had wanted me, Sandara Park, and Goo Hye Sun to be in a 3-member group.” and Sandara Park who was just standing beside her nodded.

Goo Hye Sun said, “Really? How come I didn’t get to know this?” She gave a surprised look but continued, “It’s a good thing he didn’t. I’m not good at singing.

Meanwhile, the 4th episode of 2NE1 TV will be aired at 6pm on 22nd July.
